Compact Oil Mist Detector

The Oil Mist Detector from HORN is a compact system, which can detect even the smallest changes in the oil concentration and is connected to the vessel’s automation security system. Moreover, this system can be retrofitted and mounted directly on the pipes for crankcase ventilation. Thus, no additional pipping is required in the assembly.

This system benefits you because of the:

  • Compact unit size
  • Long-term usage
  • Simple installation on breather outlet, no drilling of the engine required
  • No need for artificial suction
  • Option to have a crankcase pressure sensor
  • Retrofit service available
  • Cost-effective solution.

More than 20.000 systems installed worldwide

The oil mist detectors in the MEV283 series can easily and at low costs be installed on various engines on the crankcase breather. As the system is mounted directly on the pipes, no additional pipping is required in the assembly.

Furthermore, the detectors are available with or without an add-on to measure the pressure in the crankcase. No matter what, the oil mist concentration and the optional oil pressure in the crankcase are measured against the limits, which are set and approved by the machine manufacturer.

If the measurement of the oil mist concentration or oil pressure is above the limits the system will give a signal about the operative operation with either a pre-alarm, pressure alarm, or a main alarm. You can read more about the alarm on the ODM here.

As a standard, you are getting a 4-20mA signal for the ODM to give a signal output about the oil mist concentration and crankcase pressure. Moreover, you have the options of Ethernet and CAN bus versions available as well.

Additionally, the method of measuring with an optical sensor, as well as how the system is installed makes spare parts like pumps, filters, and such unnecessary.

OBS: The equipment can be installed with a redundant 24V to meet any demand for an independent supply of battery.

Easy and Cost-effective Retrofitting

The Oil Mist Detector from HORN, type MEV283, is very straightforward to retrofit because it only must be fitted into the vent line with 2 flanges. This means that all crankcase compartments of the engine can be monitored with just one device.

Thus, there is no need to:

  • Lay cables or pipes on the engine housing
  • Drilling holes in the drive flaps
  • Oil drops will not be thrown off the crankshaft and cause false alarms.

Moreover, the simple design and few components of the MEV 283 make it very easy to maintain, as well as highly reliable.

Typical applications

The Oil Mist Detector can be used in various settings including:

  • 4-stroke diesel engines
  • Slow/ middle/ high-speed engines
  • Used by major engine manufacturers worldwide
  • Version for hazardous application areas available.

The Oil Mist Detector is, thus, highly applicable also in the maritime industry.

The ODM in the Marine Engine

The oil mist detectors in the MEV283 series have all the relevant class approvals for marine use.

Furthermore, the ODM has significantly decreased the number of ship fires and contributed to offshore safety because the oil mist detectors act as a safety alarm. This is important as the oil mist can ignite at even low temperatures and, thus, cause severe damage like engine room fires.

Did you know the ODM is a requirement to have as well? On marine engines with an output of 2,250 kW or more, you are required to have an ODM on your engine to protect both your vessel, but also your crew.

Advantages (compared to competitors)

The function of the Oil Mist Detector is much more sensitive than other systems as it is mounted at the top of the engine. Thus, the thermal oil mist needs to come up to the single detection point.

Moreover, you have several advantages in the Oil Mist Detector from HORN compared to the competitors. The ODM is mounted at the breather outlet of an engine, and this is done with good reason as it gives you the following benefits:

  • Detects problems in the gear train
  • Detects problems with the turbocharger
  • Detects much faster than other systems the thermal oil mist from the first cylinder’s systems (less than approx.10sec -> tested)
  • Is more sensitive than competitors’ systems as lower shutdown limits are set (less than 0,5% LEL)
  • Has a similar reaction time to competitor systems for the last cylinder
  • Has no problems with load changes and no false alarms.
  • Extremely cost-effective.

Moreover, all competitors are working with compartment-specific sensors. This means, that they place a sensor in each crankcase compartment. In this case, the sensors are sensitive to oil drops that are thrown off the crankshaft.

Or they pull in air from each compartment and evaluate it in a central unit. Then the signals can be partially delayed, and the suction blowers often fail because they are oil-laden. Instead of suction fans, an air-driven ejector can also be used. This is reliable but consumes a lot of air, thus, being expensive for you.

All these systems also have a high cost for piping, wiring, and installation because they consist of many individual parts.

ODM HORN 1024 16X9

The function of the compact ODM

The compact ODM from HORN can meet the demand for an independent supply of battery and main supply of the classifications because it is available with redundant 24V.

An ‘engine-running’-signal can be used as input from the motor side to operate the system. As the oil mist detectors monitor the actual oil mist concentration and crankcase pressure a galvanic isolated analog signal output 4-20 mA is available for each of the two measured values.

You can simply connect to a monitoring and safety system, as the detector transmits the operating states:

  • Ready
  • Pre-alarm
  • Pressure alarm
  • Main alarm.

Read more about the alarms here.

Moreover, there is a configurable reserve relay; Ethernet or CAN bus interfaces can be used for data exchange of operational data, as well as operational parameters.

Customized Design ODM HORN 1024 16X9

Customized design for you

Each application of the ODM will be checked individually by a FE-simulation of the gas flow rate. Moreover, the ODM tubing will be designed according to the given engine constraints, as well as theoretical considerations will be taken into account.

Additionally, the specific engine parameters will be calculated and transferred into the software system code for an easy function.

Let the alarm help you

As mentioned earlier, the Oil Mist detector from HORN is acting as a safety alarm for the crew onboard the vessel. If the measurement of the oil mist concentration or oil pressure is above the limits the system will give a signal about the operative operation with either a:

  • Pre-alarm
  • Pressure alarm
  • Main alarm.
  • Thus, the crew can act accordingly.

Furthermore, you easily connect to a monitoring and safety system, as the detector transmits the above-mentioned operating states, which makes it even easier to monitor and rely on the highly sensitive system to react in case the oil mist ignites and causes severe damage like engine room fires.
