Our customer has found a way to avoid long waiting times, logistical considerations, and expensive solutions! With Insatech Marine's ballast water test kit, our customer can easily test and document their discharge from the ballast water treatment system - all according to regulations and requirements. So, there is no need for a laboratory anymore.

Today, most vessels are equipped with a Ballast Water Treatment System, where the owner, operators, and crew on board the ship must comply with regulations that require samples of the ballast water to be drawn and tested.

For many, the solution has been to have on-board testing performed by a third-party supplier for example in connection with the annual service of the system.

However, many vessels experience problems with handling the sample and tests. Thus, they have challenges including, but not excluded to:

  • Long waiting times for results from a laboratory
  • Not being able to logistically get the samples tested
  • Expensive solutions, both in a laboratory or if using other testing kits.

As one of our customers points out:

“We were looking for a solution, where we could analyze our samples onboard our ship, as we always have had challenges getting the samples to a shoreside laboratory for analysis within the given time frame”.

The customer avoids fines and detention with a cost-effective solution

The customer, therefore, contacted us because of our ballast water test kit, which was suitable for their needs. The test kit met their requirements because it provided the customer with the possibilities of:

  • Pass/ fail tests on board the vessel
  • Low practical testing performed and executed by the crew
  • Easy documentation of all the discharges
  • No logistic considerations.

Furthermore, the customer can use the test kit on board and do a performance check, whenever they needed it or at least monthly to secure that the Ballast Water Treatment System was working properly. This was highly necessary to make sure, that they would not be heavily fined or worse; be detained because of a system that was not working correctly.

Still, the customer had their concerns:

“Can the ballast water test kit replace the required test at a laboratory? How long will the tests in the kit last? What should we anticipate restocking every year?”

Regardless of which ballast water test kit the customer chose, we could easily address the concerns.

Comply with all regulations

First, all methods supplied comply with the VGP standards and all Port State Authorities accept onboard testing kits regardless of the systems being tested. Thus, the customer did not have to fear any problems regarding the regulations they have to comply with.

No need for a laboratory - no waiting time

Second, this test kit provided the customer with real-time monthly analysis on board to be able to establish potential problems with either the filters or biocide control of these systems. Problems, which could have led to fines or detention. So, even though the shelf life of the tests in the kit is 12 months, laboratory testing would prove expensive and take time for results to be reported, whereas the test kits are inexpensive and provide results quickly.

Low cost option with available consumable packs

Third, and still, the shorter lifetime of the tests included in the kit is no problem, as the customer could buy the consumable packs to supplement their kit annually, and thus, this test kit was still low-cost for them.

With the above-mentioned details in mind, the customer is pleased and is now using our ballast water test kit on a few vessels. However, they see the potential and say:

“We currently have a fleet of 25 vessels, which could benefit from having a test kit on board”.
