The OPTS from MTE Instruments is a strain gage torque meter that measures torque, RPM and power on rotating shafts, with no shaft disassembly or alteration. It has just two main components and needs no base mount. Its chain-link design makes installation simple and keeps lead times short.
The OpTS is designed for long-term shaft power monitoring on vessels and in industrial plants, where accurate data, simple installation and low maintenance matter most. It combines strain gage measurement with wireless telemetry in a compact design, so you get reliable torque, RPM and power readings without complex cabling or extra sensors.
Precise Shaft Power Measurement: The OpTS uses strain gage technology with a 24-bit ADC for high measurement accuracy. Torque and power are calculated automatically, so you get ready-to-use values for monitoring engine performance, propulsion efficiency and fuel consumption without manual calculation or additional processing.
Integrated Gyroscope (No RPM Pickups): A high-precision internal gyroscope measures shaft speed directly from the rotating collar. Because no external RPM sensors, cables or mounting brackets are needed, there are fewer components to install, align and maintain, and fewer potential points of failure in the engine room.
Wireless and Battery-Operated: The shaft-mounted collar and the receiver communicate wirelessly, which keeps cable routing to a minimum. The only cabled connection is from the receiver to the OpHMI monitoring system or a third-party data acquisition system, so integration is straightforward and the installation stays tidy.
Built for Long-Term Installation: With up to two years of battery life, the OpTS suits permanent installations where regular service access is limited. Its compact design fits confined spaces, making it a practical choice for tight machinery arrangements on vessels and in mining and industrial applications.
Modular “Chain Link” Collar: The collar is built from modular links, so it can be adjusted on site to fit any shaft diameter by adding or removing links with standard tools. There are no custom-machined parts to order, which shortens lead times and makes the same design suitable for a wide range of shaft sizes.
Multi-Shaft Multiplexing: One receiver can handle up to four shaft transmitters. For multi-engine or multi-shaft installations, this reduces hardware, cabling and installation effort, and gives you one central point for data collection.
Clamp-On Installation: The collar is mounted without welding, custom brackets or base mounts. This keeps the installation simple, avoids hot work on the collar and leaves the existing shaft arrangement untouched.
Key Advantages of the OpTS System
High-Resolution 24-Bit Digitalization: Precise torque and power data for fuel efficiency and emissions monitoring.
Integrated Gyroscope: Internal RPM measurement without external pickups.
Wireless Design: Fewer cables to install and maintain.
Long Battery Life: Up to two years of operation.
Flexible Data Handling: Connect to the OpHMI display or to your own data acquisition system.
Pair with the OpHMI Display
The OpTS receiver connects directly to the MTE OpHMI, a compact 10.1" touch-screen terminal that turns your shaft measurements into clear, real-time information. Torque, RPM and power are shown live on a 1280×800 capacitive display with a dark night mode, so the values are easy to read in both bright engine control rooms and low-light bridge environments.
The OpHMI is more than a display. In set-up mode it also works as the configuration terminal for the measurement system, giving quick access to its structure and instrumentation. That means one unit handles both daily operation and commissioning.
For integration with your existing systems, the OpHMI offers Modbus RTU communication towards your PLC. With the Output Option, torque, RPM and power are also available as XML or Modbus RTU output via RS-485, ready for PLC, SCADA or vessel management systems. If you already have your own data acquisition system, the OpTS receiver can also connect to it directly, so you can choose the setup that fits your vessel or plant.
The OpHMI runs on 12–24 VDC and mounts with a standard VESA 100 bracket, which makes it easy to fit in a control panel or on a console.
