Zone 2 Gas Detection for Marine and Industrial Installations

Not all spaces on board a vessel or within an industrial installation carry the same hazardous area classification. Zone 2 designates areas where an explosive gas atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation but may occur in abnormal conditions - and where Category 3 equipment such as the SMART 3G C3 is the correct specification.

Typical Zone 2 locations on board vessels include areas adjacent to classified spaces, certain deck areas, and spaces where gas accumulation is possible but not continuous. Specifying the correct ATEX category for each location is a regulatory requirement - over-specifying Zone 1 equipment in Zone 2 areas adds cost without safety benefit, while under-specifying carries serious compliance risk.

The SMART 3G C3 covers the same gas types and sensor technologies as the Zone 1 SMART 3G D2 and C2 LD, allowing operators to standardise on the SMART 3G platform across both zone classifications within a single installation.

Understanding Zone 1 vs Zone 2 - Which Detector Do You Need?

Selecting the correct ATEX category is fundamental to both compliance and cost. Here is a plain summary of the distinction:

Zone 1 (Category 2) - areas where an explosive gas atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation. The SMART 3G D2 and SMART 3G C2 LD are certified for Zone 1.

Zone 2 (Category 3) - areas where an explosive gas atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation but may occur in abnormal conditions. The SMART 3G C3 is certified for Zone 2.

Zone 1 equipment (Category 2) can be installed in Zone 2 areas but not vice versa. If you are unsure of the zone classification for your installation, your class society or a certified hazardous area assessor should confirm the classification before equipment is specified.
