Detectable Gases

The SMART 3G D2 is available in sensor-specific variants. The gas type must be matched to the correct sensor at time of order.

Catalytic sensor: Flammable gases: methane (CH₄), LPG, butane, propane, and other hydrocarbons

Electrochemical cell: Toxic gases and oxygen: carbon monoxide (CO), ammonia (NH₃), oxygen (O₂), and others

Electrochemical cell (intrinsically safe): Chlorine (Cl₂), sulphur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂)

Infrared (IR): Flammable gases, CO₂, SF₆, and refrigerant gases

PID: VOC (volatile organic compounds)

Fixed Gas Detection for Hazardous Areas

For marine applications, Zone 1 hazardous area detectors are typically required in engine rooms, pump rooms, battery compartments, refrigeration machinery spaces, and other enclosed areas where flammable or toxic gas accumulation is possible in normal operating conditions.

Beyond marine, the SMART 3G D2 is equally suited to a wide range of industrial and commercial installations - including chemical and process plants, food and beverage refrigeration facilities, parking structures, tunnels, and offshore platforms. The C2's wide sensor range - covering ammonia, methane, carbon monoxide, oxygen, refrigerants, and VOCs - makes it a practical choice for installations covering multiple gas hazard types within a single site or vessel.

Why SIL Rating Matters for Gas Detection

SIL (Safety Integrity Level) certification under IEC 61508 is increasingly specified for safety-critical instrumentation on vessels carrying hazardous cargo, LNG carriers, and offshore installations. The SMART 3G D2 carries SIL2 hardware and SIL3 software certification, meaning it has been independently assessed for its ability to perform its safety function on demand and its probability of dangerous failure.

For operators subject to class society requirements, ISM Code audits, or flag state inspections that reference functional safety standards, a SIL-rated detector provides documented evidence of system integrity - not just product certification.
