Sensitron SMART 3G GR1 Insatech

The Sensitron SMART 3G GR1 is a fixed gas detector certified for ATEX Group 1 - equipment classified for use in underground mining environments and areas susceptible to firedamp. It detects methane (CH₄), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxygen (O₂) using catalytic, infrared, or electrochemical sensors, and carries SIL2 (hardware) / SIL3 (software) certification.

The GR1 is available with or without a 4-digit illuminated display and outputs a standard 4–20 mA signal, with optional relay outputs and RS485 / Modbus communication.

Key Advantages:

  • ATEX Group 1 certified for underground mining and firedamp-susceptible areas
  • Detects methane (CH₄), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxygen (O₂)
  • Available with or without 4-digit illuminated display
  • SIL2 / SIL3 rated for functional safety requirements
  • Standard 4–20 mA output with optional 3-relay output card
  • Optional RS485 / Modbus communication
  • Continuous self-diagnostics with zero follower drift compensation

Detectable gases

The SMART 3G GR1 is available in sensor-specific variants matched to the target gas. The gas type and sensor must be confirmed at time of order.

Catalytic sensor: Methane (CH₄) and other flammable gases

Infrared (IR): Methane (CH₄)

Electrochemical cell: Carbon monoxide (CO), oxygen (O₂)

ATEX Group 1 Gas Detection - What It Means and Where It Applies

ATEX equipment classification distinguishes between Group 1 and Group 2 products. Group 2 - which covers the majority of surface industry detectors including the SMART 3G D2, C2 LD, and C3 - is for surface installations where flammable gas, vapour, or dust may be present. Group 1 is a separate and more specific classification covering equipment intended for use in underground mines and installations susceptible to firedamp.

Firedamp is the term for methane gas that accumulates naturally in coal and other mining environments. It is highly flammable and, in combination with oxygen, poses a significant explosion risk. Carbon monoxide is also a mining hazard, produced by incomplete combustion and oxidation of coal. Oxygen monitoring is required to detect both depletion and enrichment conditions.

The SMART 3G GR1 is designed and certified specifically for these conditions. It is not a direct substitute for Group 2 surface detectors and should only be specified for Group 1 classified environments.

Group 1 vs Group 2 - Selecting the Correct ATEX Classification

A common source of confusion in hazardous area gas detection is the distinction between ATEX Group 1 and Group 2. Here is a plain summary:

Group 1 - equipment for underground mines and firedamp-susceptible areas. The SMART 3G GR1 is certified Group 1.

Group 2 - equipment for surface industry hazardous areas, subdivided into Zone 1 (Category 2) and Zone 2 (Category 3). The SMART 3G D2 and C2 LD cover Zone 1; the SMART 3G C3 covers Zone 2.

Group 1 and Group 2 certifications are not interchangeable. The correct classification must be confirmed by the hazardous area assessment for the specific installation before equipment is specified.
