Standard gas detectors are designed for classified hazardous areas - but not all hazardous areas are equal. Offshore platforms, chemical processing plants, marine engine rooms, and industrial facilities with aggressive atmospheres place additional demands on detection equipment: resistance to corrosion, compatibility with existing control system architectures, and the ability to configure hardware precisely for the application rather than accepting a fixed standard specification.

The SMART S-SS addresses these demands directly. The choice between stainless steel and copper-free aluminium housing covers both general corrosion resistance and environments where copper content in enclosures must be restricted - relevant in acetylene and hydrogen-rich atmospheres. HART modem support allows integration with HART-compatible distributed control systems and asset management software, which is standard infrastructure in many process and offshore installations. RS485 communication is included as standard rather than as an optional add-on.

For installations across oil and gas, chemical processing, offshore, marine, food production, and other industries where environmental conditions or control system requirements exceed what a standard detector platform covers, the SMART S-SS is the appropriate specification.

SMART S vs SMART 3G - When to Specify the Higher-Specification Range

The SMART 3G and SMART S series share the same Zone 1 / Category 2 certification and core sensor technologies. The distinction is in customisation depth and environmental suitability:

SMART 3G series - a robust, well-certified standard platform covering the majority of Zone 1 installations. Fixed housing configuration. Non-intrusive magnetic pen calibration on D2 and C2 models. The right choice for most marine, offshore, and industrial hazardous area installations.

SMART S series (SMART S-SS) - a higher-specification platform for environments where the standard configuration is not sufficient. Customisable sensor head, base board, and enclosure. Stainless steel housing option. HART modem support. Additional ECAS-Ex certification. The right choice where corrosion resistance, HART integration, or precise hardware configuration is required.
