Scaling Gas Detection Control - From Small to Medium Installations

As the number of monitored zones in an installation grows, so does the demand on the control panel. A 4-input panel is sufficient for a single refrigeration plant room or compact machinery space, but a facility with multiple floors, zones, or process areas requires a panel with the input capacity, output flexibility, and communication capability to manage a more complex system reliably.

The Multiscan 8+ is designed for exactly this transition point - installations that have outgrown minimal panel capacity but do not yet require a large-scale system. With up to 24 inputs across both 4–20 mA and addressable loop connections, 54 total outputs, and 6 on-board relays, it provides meaningful headroom for multi-zone installations in commercial buildings, industrial facilities, marine vessels with multiple monitored spaces, and offshore platforms. The RS485 bus enables integration with building management systems, SCADA platforms, and site control infrastructure as standard, and the panel configurator software supports efficient system setup and documentation.

What to Consider When Specifying a Gas Detection Control Panel

Selecting the right control panel for a gas detection system comes down to four practical questions:

How many detector points does the installation require?

The number of inputs determines the minimum panel capacity needed. Always account for future expansion- specifying a panel at maximum capacity from day one leaves no room to add detector points as the installation grows.

What detector output type is being used?

Most Sensitron detectors output a standard 4–20 mA signal, which is accepted by all panels in the range. Some installations benefit from addressable loop connections, which reduce cable runs across multi-point systems. Confirm the detector output type before selecting a panel.

Is RS485 integration required?

RS485 enables the control panel to communicate with building management systems, SCADA platforms, and site control infrastructure. If BMS integration is a requirement, confirm RS485 is included as standard on the panel specified.

Is a SIL rating required?

For installations subject to functional safety standards — offshore platforms, process plants, or any site where IEC 61508 compliance is specified - a SIL-rated panel is a requirement, not an option.
