Gas Detection Control for Large and Complex Installations

Large installations - offshore platforms, industrial processing plants, commercial buildings with multiple floors and zones, shipyards, and vessels with numerous monitored spaces - place demands on gas detection control infrastructure that smaller panels cannot meet. The Multiscan ++S1 is designed for this level of system complexity. Its four-configuration range scales from 40 inputs and 72 outputs in the S1-32 variant up to 264 inputs and 520 outputs in the S1-256, covering the full range of large installation requirements within a single panel platform. Galvanically isolated RS485 buses protect system integrity by preventing fault propagation between bus lines - a critical feature in large systems where a single bus fault could otherwise affect multiple zones. What to Consider When Specifying a Control Panel for a Large Gas Detection System

Large gas detection systems introduce specification considerations that do not apply at smaller scales. Four questions are particularly important:

How many detector points are required - now and in the future?

The Multiscan ++S1 range scales from 40 to 264 total inputs. Specifying headroom for future expansion avoids the cost of panel replacement as an installation grows.

How many RS485 buses are needed?

Multiple RS485 buses allow the system to be segmented by zone, floor, or process area - improving fault isolation and simplifying integration with building management or SCADA systems. The S1-128 and S1-256 variants support up to 4 open or 2 closed buses.

Is galvanic isolation required between bus lines?

In large or safety-critical installations, galvanic isolation between RS485 buses prevents a fault on one bus from propagating to others. All Multiscan ++S1 RS485 buses are galvanically isolated as standard.

Is SIL1 certification required?

For installations subject to functional safety standards, the Multiscan ++S1's SIL1 certification provides documented evidence of system-level safety integrity alongside EN 60079-29-1 compliance.
