SIL2 Certified Gas Detection Control - When the Higher Rating Is Required

SIL (Safety Integrity Level) certification quantifies a safety system's ability to perform its required function on demand and its probability of dangerous failure. SIL1 is appropriate for many industrial and commercial gas detection installations. SIL2 is required - or specified - where the consequences of system failure are more severe: offshore platforms, chemical processing plants, LNG facilities, large-scale industrial sites, and any installation where a functional safety assessment under IEC 61508 or IEC 61511 concludes that a higher safety integrity level is needed.

The Multiscan ++S2 is the SIL2-rated equivalent of the Multiscan ++S1, sharing the same input and output capacity across the same four configuration variants. The step up to SIL2 reflects a more rigorous assessment of the panel's probability of dangerous failure on demand - providing documented evidence of a higher level of system integrity for installations where that standard is specified or required by class societies, insurers, or regulatory authorities.

What to Consider When Specifying a Control Panel for a Large Gas Detection System

Large gas detection systems introduce specification considerations that do not apply at smaller scales. Four questions are particularly important:

How many detector points are required - now and in the future?

The Multiscan ++S2 range scales from 40 to 264 total inputs across four configurations. Specifying headroom for future expansion avoids the cost of panel replacement as an installation grows.

Is SIL1 or SIL2 required?

 For installations where a functional safety assessment specifies SIL2, the Multiscan ++S2 is the correct panel. Where SIL1 is sufficient, the Multiscan ++S1 provides equivalent capacity at a lower functional safety rating.

Are closed or open RS485 loops required?

The Multiscan ++S2 uses closed galvanically isolated RS485 loops, which provide fault tolerance by allowing the loop to continue operating even if a single point failure occurs. The Multiscan ++S1 supports both open and closed bus configurations.

Is self-diagnostic capability important?

The Multiscan ++S2's microprocessor-based self-testing actively detects and localises faults within the system - providing faster fault identification and reducing the risk of undetected failures in large multi-zone installations.
