Product features

MED certified for marine use
The T4 carries MED certification under Directive 2014/90/EU and UKCA MED (MSN1874) - making it one of the few portable multi-gas detectors certified for use on EU-flagged and UK-flagged vessels. For ship operators requiring certified personal gas detection for confined space entry, tank inspections, and maintenance operations on board, the T4 meets the regulatory requirement directly.

TWA Resume - accurate exposure tracking across breaks
A unique function on the T4 and T4x. TWA (Time Weighted Average) is the standard measure of worker exposure to toxic gases over a shift - but conventional detectors reset the TWA calculation when switched off during breaks or transit. TWA Resume maintains the cumulative calculation across power cycles, ensuring accurate exposure tracking even when the detector is turned off and back on during the same shift. This is directly relevant for compliance with occupational exposure limits.

Single button, glove-operable
The T4's large single button and intuitive menu system require minimal training and can be operated with work gloves - reducing the risk of operational errors in demanding conditions. The display can be flipped 180° for easy viewing in different wearing positions.

Crowcon's toughest portable
Drop tested to 4 metres onto concrete with an integrated rubber boot as standard. IP65 and IP67 rated. Operating range -20°C to +55°C. Built for continuous use in the most demanding marine, offshore, and industrial environments.

18+ hours battery life
Comfortably covers a full working day without recharging. The optional 10-unit cradle charger and vehicle charger support fleet charging requirements on vessels and at shore-based facilities.

I-Test automated bump and calibration
The optional I-Test station provides automated bump testing and calibration - compatible with the T4 and T4x - simplifying fleet compliance management for operations running multiple detectors.

130 hours data logging
Up to 3,500 events or 130 hours of gas level history - available via USB or Crowcon Connect for compliance reporting and incident investigation.

MED Certified Portable Gas Detection - What It Means for Ship Operators

For vessels subject to the Marine Equipment Directive (2014/90/EU), safety equipment installed or carried on board EU-flagged vessels must carry MED certification - confirming it has been assessed against the harmonised standards applicable to marine safety equipment.

The T4 is MED certified under both the EU Directive and UKCA MED (MSN1874) - covering vessels flagged under both EU member states and the United Kingdom. For safety officers, ship superintendents, and purchasing managers specifying portable gas detection for shipboard confined space entry, maintenance, and emergency response, MED certification removes the uncertainty around regulatory compliance for the detector itself.

On board vessels, the four gases covered by the T4 - oxygen depletion, flammable gases, hydrogen sulphide, and carbon monoxide - represent the standard confined space entry gas hazard profile for most vessel types. Cargo holds, pump rooms, void spaces, engine rooms, and accommodation spaces all present one or more of these hazards during entry. The T4's four-gas coverage in a single, MED-certified unit makes it a practical specification for general shipboard confined space entry programmes.

The Four Most Common Gas Hazards - Why They Matter Together

Confined space entry safety standards - including those referenced by flag states, class societies, and the IMO's guidelines on confined space entry - consistently identify four gas hazards as the baseline requirement for atmosphere testing before and during entry:

Oxygen (O₂) - depletion below 19.5% vol. creates an immediately dangerous atmosphere. Enrichment above 23.5% vol. significantly increases fire and explosion risk.

Flammable gases - the presence of methane, LPG, or other flammable gases above a defined percentage of LEL (Lower Explosive Limit) creates explosion risk.

Hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) - acutely toxic at low concentrations, H₂S is present in cargo tanks, bilges, sewage spaces, and any space where organic material has decomposed.

Carbon monoxide (CO) - produced by incomplete combustion from engines and generators, CO is odourless, colourless, and acutely toxic. A risk wherever combustion equipment is operating in an enclosed space.

The T4 covers all four in a single device - removing the need for multiple detectors during confined space entry and simplifying the pre-entry atmosphere test procedure for crew.
