T4x Crowcon Front Insatech

The Crowcon T4x is a Zone 0 approved multi-gas portable detector providing enhanced personal protection for the four most common gas hazards - carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, flammable gases, and oxygen depletion. Building on the T4 platform, the T4x introduces three advanced sensor technology options: the MPS™ sensor for flammable gas detection with zero risk of device poisoning and coverage of 15+ flammable gases, Long-Life O₂ (LLO2) for extended sensor life, and a Dual Toxic sensor for simultaneous CO and H₂S detection. Battery life reaches up to 35+ hours with MPS and LLO2 options - double that of the standard T4. ATEX II 1G Ex ia IIC T4 Ga - Category 1, Zone 0 rated.

Key Advantages:

  • Zone 0 rated - ATEX II 1G Ex ia IIC T4 Ga, IECEx and UKCA certified
  • MPS™ sensor - zero risk of device poisoning, detects 15+ flammable gases
  • Up to 35+ hours battery life with MPS and LLO2 sensor options
  • Long-Life O₂ (LLO2) sensor - lower lifetime cost than standard O₂ sensors
  • UKCA MED certified (MSN1874) - EU MED pending
  • Drop tested to 4 metres onto concrete - IP65 and IP67 rated

We deliver directly and globally to end-users, agents, and resellers.

Product features

Zone 0 approved - the highest ATEX classification
The T4x carries ATEX II 1G Ex ia IIC T4 Ga - Category 1, rated for Zone 0. This means it can be used in Zone 0, Zone 1, and Zone 2 classified areas - including the interior of cargo tanks, storage tanks, and other continuously explosive atmospheres where Zone 0 rated equipment is required. The T4 is Zone 1 / Category 2; for Zone 0 applications the T4x is the correct specification.

MPS™ sensor - zero poisoning risk, 15+ flammable gases
Crowcon's MPS™ (Molecular Property Spectrometer) sensor detects over 15 flammable gases in a single device without the poisoning risk associated with traditional catalytic bead (pellistor) sensors. Pellistor sensors can be permanently damaged by exposure to silicones, lead compounds, and halogenated compounds - a real risk in industrial and marine environments. The MPS™ sensor eliminates this failure mode entirely, reducing the risk of an undetected sensor failure and lowering lifetime maintenance costs.

Long-Life O₂ (LLO2) sensor
The LLO2 option provides a longer-life oxygen sensor compared to standard electrochemical O₂ sensors, reducing the frequency and cost of sensor replacement over the detector's operational life.

35+ hours battery life
With MPS and LLO2 sensor options, the T4x achieves up to 35+ hours runtime - double the standard T4's 18 hours. This covers multiple shifts or extended working days without recharging, reducing operational interruptions for crews working long rotations.

Dual Toxic sensor option
The Dual Toxic sensor detects CO and H₂S simultaneously using a single sensor slot - allowing the T4x to monitor all four standard confined space gases without requiring four separate sensor positions.

Same rugged platform as the T4
Integrated rubber boot, drop tested to 4 metres onto concrete, IP65 and IP67 rated, operating range -20°C to +55°C. Single button operation with optional 180° display flip for easy viewing whilst worn.

I-Test automated bump and calibration
The optional I-Test station provides automated bump testing and calibration compatible with the T4x - simplifying fleet compliance management.

Zone 0 Portable Detection - When It Is Required and Why

ATEX Zone 0 is the highest hazardous area classification - designating spaces where an explosive atmosphere is present continuously, for long periods, or frequently. The interior of cargo tanks on tankers, storage tanks, and process vessels holding flammable liquids or gases are typical Zone 0 spaces.

For confined space entry into Zone 0 classified areas, personal gas detection equipment must carry Zone 0 / ATEX Category 1 approval. A Zone 1 / Category 2 detector such as the standard T4 cannot be specified for Zone 0 entry - and using Category 2 equipment in a Zone 0 space is a compliance failure under the ATEX Directive with direct safety implications.

The T4x's Zone 0 approval, combined with MED and UKCA MED certification, makes it one of the most comprehensively certified portable detectors available for confined space entry on tankers, chemical carriers, and offshore platforms where Zone 0 spaces are a routine part of vessel operations. For ship operators, safety superintendents, and HSE managers specifying personal detection for cargo tank entry, the T4x is the appropriate specification.

T4 vs T4x - Which Is the Right Specification?

The T4 and T4x share the same form factor, gas coverage, accessories, and data logging capability. The meaningful differences are:

ATEX zone - the T4 is Zone 1 / Category 2 (ATEX II 2G). The T4x is Zone 0 / Category 1 (ATEX II 1G). For confined space entry into Zone 0 classified spaces - cargo tanks, storage tanks - the T4x is required.

Sensor technology - the T4 uses standard pellistor and electrochemical sensors. The T4x adds MPS™ for flammable gas detection (zero poisoning risk, 15+ gases) and LLO2 for extended oxygen sensor life. In environments where sensor poisoning is a concern - silicone-rich, lead-compound, or halogenated atmospheres - the T4x with MPS™ is the safer and more cost-effective long-term choice.

Battery life - the T4 provides 18+ hours. The T4x with MPS and LLO2 provides 35+ hours - relevant for multiple shift deployments or extended confined space operations.

MED status - the T4 holds full EU MED certification. The T4x holds UKCA MED (MSN1874) with EU MED pending. For EU-flagged vessels where EU MED certification is a requirement, confirm the current status of the T4x EU MED before specifying.

If Zone 0 approval, MPS™ sensor technology, or extended battery life are requirements for your application, the T4x is the correct choice. For standard Zone 1 confined space entry on EU-flagged vessels where full EU MED certification is required now, the T4 is currently the confirmed option.

Have a question about the Crowcon T4x?

Our team can advise on Zone 0 requirements, MPS™ sensor suitability, MED certification status, and whether the T4x or T4 is the right specification for your application.
